In February 1964, Eric Dolphy gathered a few musicians and took advantage of a vacant studio to record Out to Lunch in just half a day. He then followed this with a European tour in Mingus’s quintet, a date or two with Coltrane, and tragically passed away in June of the same year. Needless to say, he never performed this repertoire in concert...
This music is available, nearly untouched, in weightlessness, with the swifts tracing arabesques in the sky of unfinished works. It needs to be watered to see it grow, graspable like the thumb and immanent to be savored, in order to reap its freedom of expression and perpetuate its jubilant calling.
The compositions on this album and its structure do not adhere to the jazz criteria of the time; but as we all know, neither does ARFI!
