BARON SAMEDI Baron Samedi, from whom the group takes its name, is one of the many household voodoo gods worshipped in Haiti. But in its repertoire, the group takes its inspiration from many sources.
In Baron Samedi's music we find a succession or overlapping of rhythms from various traditions - the oral traditions of Africa, Japan, Korea, South America, Central Europe, and also that of jazz and Western drumming - which the musicians have adapted or recomposed, whilst respecting the original. It is played mainly with sticks and is often (a characteristic of traditional music) spectacular, with the addition of rich timbres and a balanced use of polyrhythmics.
The group uses neither pastiche nor simple copying, but takes up the dance element from each of the chosen pieces. And the musicians are faithful to their sources, as may be seen from the sheer energy of their performance and the importance of the dance element.
Baron Samedi is also great when it comes to meeting up with other musicians: three Ukrainian women singers for Diakouyou, Michel Godard, Jean-Marie Maddeddu for Baron Samedi s'endimanche, the Guarionnex Aquino Trio for Sabado Domingo.
Baron Samedi's art has delighted audiences far and wide, from Kiev to Saragossa, not forgetting such places as Moers, Tampere, Rio, Albi, Paris, Parthenay, Barcelone, Assier, Curitiba...
